maxillary skeletal expansion (mse)

Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (or MSE) has completely revolutionized how we think about our ability as orthodontists to help re-establish the width of the upper jaw.

Post industrial revolution, our human faces changed. Softer diets of pre-cooked, pre-packaged foods quickly changed our faces for the worse. Our jaws narrowed and face elongated and teeth crowded. Without a diet that we actively had to chew (think nuts berries, seed, meat, fiber) our bones were no longer stimulated in the same way and unfortunately our mouths suffered as a result. But we know now, it’s not just the mouth that suffered. By losing the width of our upper jaw, we narrowed the nasal passages, created less room for the tongue and our airways became constricted. More colds and stuffy noses, more sleep disordered breathing, snoring, mouth-breathing, sleep apnea. So much of our health and well being is tied to whether we have sufficient width of the upper jaw.

MSE allows us to expand adults that we once thought were destined for surgical expansion.  Expansion can now be achieved non-surgically using Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE).  The Maxillary Skeletal Expander is placed with only local anesthetic and is held in place by 4  temporary implants in the palate.   This is an unbelievable option to improve airway and respiratory function, open nasal cavity spaces, allow space for the tongue, and relieve crowding issues and crossbites.   By expanding the upper jaw you are increasing the airway space. This greatly benefits those with sleep apnea, fatigue, breathing problems and difficulty sleeping.  Are you an adult that suffers from any of these disorders? You can improve your overall health with MSE!
